The Zubeida Picks: Favourite African Proverbs

African proverbs are our favourite way to get across some lovely and sassy points!

Here are our top 5!

1. Wisdom is like a baobab tree; no one individual can embrace it. ~ Akan proverb

Our resident Baobab tree agrees! Baobab trees can live for over a thousand years; the largest circumference on record is 47 metres.

2. We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors we borrow it from our children. ~ Haida Proverb

You may wonder why we speak and draw awareness to the health of our planet and what steps we try and take to help protect our home, but it is even more important to know that #ThereIsNoPlanetB. Earth is our home, and it should be kept safe for our children's children.

Look through our sustainability blog posts and you'll be pleasantly surprised by how easily you can take some steps to shift toward sustainable living.

3. If you educate a man you educate one individual, but if you educate a woman you educate a family. ~Fanti Proverb

This is one of our favourite proverbs. It has encouraged us to help our local community and organisations such as the Kenya Kesho School for Girls. We choose to empower the community by shopping and supporting local, employing artists and staff members that truly embody the coastal spirit The Zubeida is known for.

4. Traveling is learning. ~ Kenyan Proverb

Kenya is one of the most magical places on the planet! Brilliant white stretches of beach, oceans teeming with marine life and safari experiences that will blow your mind... we truly have the terrain for everyone! Family-friendly activities, world-renowned hospitality and world-class cuisine, travelling is truly a balm for the soul and there's always a lesson to learn!

5. No water without waves. ~ Kenyan Proverb

We love our Diani and South Coast community and all that we can do to help support families. We know that trials and tribulations are a part of life, and we love feeling at home beside the ocean. It often reflects our very human emotions back at us, bringing us back to ourselves and allowing us to grow and evolve.
